Εγκαταλείποντας τη μεταπολεμική Ευρώπη, ο οραματιστής αρχιτέκτονας László Toth φτάνει στην Αμερική για να ξαναφτιάξει τη ζωή του, το έργο του και τον γάμο του με τη σύζυγό του Erzsébet, αφού αναγκάστηκε να χωρίσει κατά τη διάρκεια του πολέμου λόγω της αλλαγής συνόρων και καθεστώτων. Μόνος του σε μια παράξενη νέα χώρα, ο László εγκαθίσταται στην Πενσυλβάνια, όπου ο πλούσιος και εξέχων βιομήχανος Harrison Lee Van Buren αναγνωρίζει το ταλέντο του στην κατασκευή.
