KAFKA MACHINE
A show about the spectators' guilty silence
Directed by Stelios Vrachnis
Protasi Theater Company presents the "KAFKA MACHINE" directed by Stelios Veachnis. A performance based on the "Penal Colony" by Franz Kafka. The moving story, which caused people to faint during its first public reading in 1916 in Munich, is being adapted and presented on stage as part of the festival Open Theatre Stage of the City, premiering on March 31st in Aneton municipal theatre.
"All of the evils that take place outside the Western World ―human trafficking, famine, poverty, lack of freedom, illiteracy― all of them move and affect Europe, for sure. However, within our protective glass cage everything looks like a movie. Within our safe space everything looks very far away".
The director Stelios Vrachnis, after the "Letter to the father" revisits the writings of Franz Kafka, this time inspired by the "Penal Colony". The monumental work by the great author of the 20th century, which still remains relevant, was written in the heart of World War I and condemns the cruelest form of violence that we have encountered until today.
In a state-of-the art autoritarian regime, three bodies ―the officer, the soldier, and the condemned― present to two European visitors a "peculiar" apparatus, a torturing mechanism, that inscribes the punishment on the condemned person's body for twelve hours straight, until death. Two representatives of the Western Civilisation will witness live the execution of a human. They, despite being sensitised to the sight of violence, remain inert and protected behind their glass wall, defending at every cost their bloodthirsty innocence, since "the involvement in other people's businesses always causes trouble"
A performance ― spectacle that highlights the topics of cannibalism, and the pleasure that the torturer receives. More than that, a show that attempts to expose the spectator who consumes violence on tv, in their living room, while eating popcorn, as a "voyeur" of violence.
