“The phone is ringing and you pick up fast.
And then there is silence, and then there is dust.
And then there’s the sound of a heartbeat in pieces.
And then there’s the song that your beast still unleashes.
The dog is howling the song of my tears.
The dog is my sorrow, the enemy’s near.
I sink in the depths of this unknown sea.
Today I’m a traveler, tonight I’ll be free.”
The dog runs the show.
Εκκινώντας από προσωπικά της βιώματα, και έχοντας ως γνώμονα το βιβλίο “The Body Keeps the
Score: Brain, Mind and Body in the Healing of Trauma” (2014, Bessel van der Kolk, MD), η Πηνελόπη

EMOTIONAL DOGS is an escapist journey.
Our heroes swirl, dive into a watery world, where their only connection to the upper world is a "control center" with radio transmitters, televisions, cassette players. However, nothing is under control when their “inner animal has taken the reins".
The dog runs the show.
Fragmented stimuli interrupt their surfacing mission – when the relationship between the rational and emotional brain is violently disrupted, the whole body enters a constant state of survival.
A traumatic experience is not experienced as a linear, logical sequence of sensations and emotions. And words are never enough to describe such a story.
To how many meters can one sink before the "leakage" begins in their protective suit?
EMOTIONAL DOGS confides personal experiences, demystifies situations and confronts painful realities, with the aim of freeing the imagination from mental shackles and restoring the ability of the human body, no matter how "broken" it is, to dream and hope.
EMOTIONAL DOGS is realized under the auspices and with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture.
Starting from her personal experiences, and guided by Bessel van der Kolk’s book “The Body Keeps the
Score: Brain, Mind and Body in the Healing of Trauma” – with whom she also did a physical intensive
seminar during September 2023 in Athens -, Penelope Morout immersed into a creative process that
lasted two years and included extensive research in philosophical theories, neuroscience and
psychology.
Within the context of the research mentioned above, Penelope Morout received funding from the
Hellenic Ministry of Culture, as well as additional support from cultural organizations in Greece, Italy,
Spain and England, in the form of artistic residencies, in order to evolve and realize this artistic project.
More specifically, these organizations are:
X-Church – Ashcroft Road, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire DN21 1BY, UK
Murate Art District – Piazza delle Murate, 50122, Florence, Italy
