Αντί για οργή απέναντι στον κόσμο, πενθεί με τον δικό της διαφορετικό τρόπο: βγαίνει έξω, μιλά δημόσια και αγωνίζεται να ανταλλάξει την πατριαρχία με την αγάπη για χάρη της κοινωνίας μας. Συνυφαίνοντας καθημερινές στιγμές με την ιστορία της πρωταγωνίστριάς μας, η ταινία προσπαθεί να περιγράψει την κοινοτοπία αυτού του κακού. Το Mothers of Daughters ξεπερνάει τα όρια του ντοκιμαντέρ προσπαθώντας με ποιητικό και ευαίσθητο τρόπο να βρει εικόνες για αυτή την απίστευτη ιστορία, η οποία θα μπορούσε να συμβεί στο καθένα μας.

Instead of reacting with rage against the world, she mourns in her own different way: by going out, speaking publicly, and fighting to trade love for patriarchy for the sake of our society. By interweaving every-day moments with the story of our protagonist, the film tries to describe the banality of this evil. Mothers of Daughters pushes the boundaries of documentary filmmaking by poetically and sensitively trying to find imagery for this unbelievable story, that could happen to any of us.

Στα έρημα, άδεια δωμάτια ενός απροσδιόριστου μη τόπου (θα μπορούσε να είναι πανδοχείο, σχολείο, εκκλησία ή οτιδήποτε έχει σχεδιαστεί για να φιλοξενεί αγνώστους) μια γυναίκα προσπαθεί να φέρει εις πέρας με αφοσίωση μια απροσδιόριστη αποστολή: παραδομένη στην εμμονή της να ενδημεί σε εσωτερικούς χώρους, άλλοτε ως φύλακας κι άλλοτε ως φάντασμα που στοιχειώνει το οίκημα, μας εξοικειώνει με ολότελα διαφορετικά εργαλεία με τη μοναξιά και τη μελαγχολία των ερειπίων. Αν το «πνεύμα του τόπου» είχε πρόσωπο, αυτό θα είχε οπωσδήποτε τα χαρακτηριστικά της Λαρίσα Κοριβό, τακτικής συνεργάτιδας ενός από τους πιο ιδιοσυγκρασιακούς σκηνοθέτες του παγκόσμιου σινεμά, ο οποίος εδώ εξερευνεί τη δυναμική των λεγόμενων «οριακών» χώρων και του πεδίου που ανοίγουν για την προβολή των πιο μύχιων επιθυμιών μας. Μια ταινία με ορθάνοιχτη φόρμα για τα κλειστά δωμάτια του ψυχισμού, η οποία μας προσκαλεί στα ενδότερα για να συναντήσουμε ό,τι επιμένει να μας περιορίζει.

Behind the walls of the desolate, empty rooms of an unidentified non-place (it could be an inn, a school, a church, or anything designed to accommodate strangers), a woman tries to carry out an abstract mission with the utmost dedication: Surrendered to her obsession to inhabit interior spaces, sometimes as a custodian and other times as a ghost that haunts the edifice, she chooses a different register to get us acquainted with the loneliness and melancholy of ruination. If genius loci, the “spirit of the place” had a face, that would certainly have the expression of Larisa Korivo, a frequent collaborator of one of the most idiosyncratic directors in world cinema; in his interpretation of the phenomenon of kenopsia (the eerie atmosphere of a place that's usually bustling with people but is now abandoned and quiet), Coté explores the dynamics of the so-called liminal spaces and opens up a field for the projection of our innermost desires. A film with a wide-open form inviting us to the sealed rooms of the soul, so that we can finally encounter what insists on keeping us confined.
