The muse that has captivated the Greek audience, the sensual Canadian singer-songwriter Loreena McKennitt, the elf with the ethereal voice and dreamy melodies, celebrates with a European tour the 30th anniversary of her most iconic album, "The Mask and Mirror."
The tour will kick off in Athens, the first stop, with a premiere at the Herodion on June 26, 2024. It will then take McKennitt and her band to more than 20 cities in Greece, Turkey, Spain, Germany, and Italy, concluding in Merano, Italy on July 25. Notably, right after Athens, Loreena McKennitt will perform live in Thessaloniki on June 27.
"The Mask and Mirror" was released in 1994. It was her fifth album and is considered the best of her career, a turning point in her music, with sales of more than two million copies worldwide. Billboard described it as "eternal and transcendent" and praised it for its "cross-cultural identity" as it combined Celtic, Spanish, and Moroccan influences.
Speaking of which, McKennitt claims that her inspiration came from specific paths of inner enlightenment and that she is examining fundamental questions that have echoed down the ages: what the origin of God is, what religion and spirituality are, what has indeed been revealed to us and what has remained hidden, and what is ultimately revealed by "the mask and the mirror."
At the Herodion and in Thessaloniki, in her two "Greek" concerts, we will not only hear "The Mask and Mirror," which will, of course, form the backbone of the program, but the setlist will also include some of McKennitt's favorite songs, including Tango to Evora, the "Tango of Nefeli" that Haroula Alexiou arranged in Greek in 1996. Joining her on stage will be her regular musical collaborators Caroline Lavelle on cello, Brian Hughes on guitar, Hugh Marsh on violin, Dudley Phillips on bass, and Robert Brian on drums.
"This album has been a historical and musical pilgrimage for me, and I'm excited to bring it back to Europe this summer, a time that allows me to perform in so many open spaces," McKennitt says. "It's undoubtedly a milestone anniversary in my career, and I'm looking forward to celebrating it with so many people I haven't seen in a long time."
The recording of "The Mask and Mirror," a production by Loreena McKennitt, includes eight tracks. McKennitt is accompanied by 12 musicians and a choral ensemble.
McKennitt's eclectic Celtic blend of pop, folk, and world music has sold over 14 million albums worldwide. Her recordings have been gold, platinum, and multi-platinum in 15 countries on four continents. McKennitt has twice been nominated for a GRAMMY® Award, winning two Juno Awards and a Billboard International Achievement Award.
As for the impressions of her live performances, it's enough to read three reviews: "A fantastic concert! I hated the show's end; I wish it lasted for hours!" "Her voice is as strong and perfect as ever. She has a hot presence, and I loved the personal stories." "I counted 25 years of waiting to see Loreena live, and finally, last night, I had my first chance. She didn't disappoint me in the slightest."
Thirty years after we heard the first note, Loreena is coming to our country to baptize us live in the mystique of the iconic "The Mask and Mirror." She will initiate us into spirituality and the perpetual journey from darkness to the light that governs it, playing it in its entirety, as it was written and as it granted her artistic immortality, defeating the forces of time's decay.
